Search engine optimization, otherwise known as SEO, is the art of enhancing the quantity and quality of site visitors to a particular website or a website. SEO targets both paid and unpaid traffic, instead of direct traffic from websites like pay-per-click or ads on search results pages. Both paid and unpaid traffic share some common characteristics, and both are equally important for successful SEO campaigns.
The first important step in SEO is choosing the right keywords. These must be relevant to the product, or service, that is being offered. They can be chosen by doing a keyword analysis. Keywords must also fit in with the theme of the site.
When choosing keywords, it is important to remember that you do not have to use them word for word in every sentence. SEO experts advise, instead, to use keywords a few times throughout a page, sprinkled in naturally in content. This makes each sentence more natural sounding and less robotic. Using SEO keywords in content helps the spiders find your site more often and more accurately.
Second, keyword stuffing is frowned upon in SEO circles. stuffing is not only ineffective in increasing the number of relevant keywords, but it can also hurt your ranking. In SEO jargon, this is called “white hat” SEO, which is much respected and much sought after. White hat SEO practices don’t use keywords like “hot dog”, “cancer”, “chair”, etc., though these are acceptable in some cases. “SEO friendly” techniques such as these are less likely to hurt your ranking.
Third, the use of meta tags is important to SEO. A meta tag is a small piece of HTML code at the bottom of a web page. It is what identifies a particular webpage, and is also what allows search engines to determine the topic of a given web page. Using meta tags effectively will allow you to target specific keywords, thus increasing your SEO ranking. Don’t overdo it with these, though, as this could cause problems with your site’s SEO ranking.
Fourth, use an SEO friendly site map. A site map is like the navigation menu for your website. It lists all of your pages within your site, from index to exit. It should list all keywords that you want people to enter into the search box so you can increase your SEO ranking. Make sure you update your site map on a regular basis, though, or else Google might see your site as spam.
Fifth, use back links. Back links are important for SEO. They connect your site to other sites, both on the web and off. The more back links you have out there, the better chance you have of getting seen by someone searching for what you have to offer. If you do have a good amount of back links, that counts for a lot.
There are plenty of ways to optimize your site for SEO. While each of them is going to take some time and effort, they will all work to help you improve your search engine ranking. Take the time to do them properly, and you will be very successful in the SEO world.
Six, have good content. The main problem most people face with their websites is not having a good, fresh content on their pages. The search engines don’t have time to read rehashed content, and they certainly don’t like it when they are searching for new information. Write your own original content if you need to, but make sure it is worth reading.
Seven, don’t put your site in the same group as a competitor. For one thing, you should not try to act like them. You can do that in an honest way, but most of us tend to downplay our competitors and pretend they aren’t as big a deal as they really are. This is wrong, and it can get you banned from using the site.
Eight, have lots of links out on the internet. The more links you have out there, the more chance you will get found. But too many links in the wrong places can hurt you as well. Check to see if you aren’t using sites that are link farming to boost your rankings. It’s not the best thing for your business to do, but it’s important to do nonetheless.
